When should you turn compost based on temperature?

Turn for a documented reason—not merely because the pile reached one number or a calendar date. Use the temperature trend with moisture, odor, structure, pile method, and composting stage.

There is no universal turning temperature

University guidance differs because a turned backyard pile, passive pile, tumbler, windrow, and aerated static pile move air differently. A productive hot reading can support continued observation; a falling or excessive temperature can justify action only after the surrounding conditions are checked.

Read the trend before you turn

Measure comparable locations over time. One probe reading describes that location, not the entire pile.

Temperature is rising and conditions are healthy

Usually observe: if moisture is suitable, odor is earthy, and structure is open, do not turn automatically. Record the center plus an outer, side, or lower reading and let the trend develop.

The pile is excessively hot

Cool it safely: university sources commonly warn that microbial activity declines at very high temperatures. Method-appropriate turning or aeration can dissipate heat. If material is smoking, smells scorched, or approaches about 160°F / 71°C, treat it as a fire-safety concern.

Temperature peaked, then substantially declined

Turning may help: when unfinished material remains and moisture is adequate, turning can restore oxygen, loosen clumps, and move cooler outer material through the active center. Record whether the pile reheats.

The pile is cool, wet, slimy, or sour

Correct air and moisture together: stop adding water, protect from excess rain, add dry coarse browns if needed, and use method-appropriate mixing or aeration. The reason to turn is the documented wet/low-oxygen condition—not cool temperature alone.

The pile is cool and dry

Restore moisture: add water gradually while mixing a turned pile so moisture is distributed. A dry pile may remain cool even with a reasonable planning C:N ratio.

Turning no longer restores heat

Consider curing: if moisture is adequate, odor is earthy, temperature remains near ambient, and most inputs are no longer recognizable, continued turning to force heat may be unnecessary.

Make the reading comparable

1Measure more than the center

Check the center and at least one outer, side, or lower position. Wait for the probe to stabilize.

2Record context

Log date, time, ambient temperature, probe position, moisture feel, odor, weather, and the last action.

3Check the method

Do not apply a windrow schedule to a passive pile, tumbler, or forced-air system.

4Recheck the response

After a correction, measure comparable positions again. Reheating is evidence of a response, not proof of sanitation.

What turning actually changes

  • Introduces short-term oxygen and restores pore space.
  • Breaks clumps and improves ingredient contact.
  • Moves cooler outer material toward the active center.
  • Can distribute added water—or dry a pile if turned without watering.
  • Dissipates heat, so unnecessary turning can temporarily cool a pile.
Sanitation boundary

Productive heating is not the same as verified pathogen reduction. Formal windrow and aerated-static-pile protocols specify time, temperature, turning or aeration, coverage, and records. A backyard center-temperature log is useful management evidence, but it is not regulatory certification.
