Is your compost too wet?

A wet surface after rain is not enough to diagnose the whole pile. Check an interior sample, odor, structure, drainage, temperature trend, and pile method before deciding what to add or how to aerate.

Moisture and oxygen share the same pore space

Microbes need water, but excess water can fill spaces that otherwise carry oxygen. The result can be slower aerobic decomposition, lower temperature, sour or rotten odor, and leachate. The upper useful moisture limit varies with particle size, density, and structure, so a field squeeze test is a screen—not a laboratory percentage.

Confirm the condition

Five signs that support a wet-pile diagnosis

No single sign is conclusive. Check the interior in more than one location and consider recent rain, watering, and added feedstocks.

An interior handful releases excess liquid

Wear gloves and sample below the surface. Material should feel moist rather than dripping. A dry surface can hide a saturated center.

The pile is matted, dense, or slimy

Fine particles and collapsed structure reduce air-filled pore space. Moisture can be excessive even when free water is not obvious.

Odor is sour, rotten, or persistently foul

Bad odor can indicate anaerobic conditions caused by excess water, compaction, excess nitrogen, or a combination. Ammonia odor can also point to excess available nitrogen.

Leachate or runoff leaves the pile

Escaping liquid is strong evidence of excess water and creates a water-quality concern. Keep it away from drains, wells, ditches, and surface water.

Temperature stalls or falls while material remains unfinished

Limited oxygen can suppress aerobic heat production. Temperature alone cannot distinguish wetness from dryness, small pile size, curing, weather, or an unbalanced mix.

Correct in this order

Restore balance without guessing

Make measured, incremental changes and record the response.

1Stop adding water and wet feedstock

Pause irrigation and very wet greens. Protect the pile from heavy rain while preserving airflow; do not seal an active pile airtight.

2Control runoff

Divert clean upslope water around the site. Keep leachate out of waterways and follow local requirements for collection or disposal.

3Add dry carbon and structure

Mix in dry leaves, shredded plain cardboard, or another suitable dry carbon. Include coarse porous material when the pile is dense; absorbency alone does not restore pore space.

4Aerate for the method

Turn and redistribute a turned pile, operate a tumbler without overpacking it, or correct airflow in an aerated static pile. Avoid repeated turning that releases odor without fixing porosity.

5Recheck comparable locations

Record correction quantities, interior moisture, odor, temperature, ambient conditions, and probe positions. Add more dry material only if observations still support it.

Choose the correction by cause

  • Heavy rain: shed or cover from additional rain and correct saturated zones.
  • Too many wet greens: blend in dry carbon thoroughly.
  • Fine or compacted mix: add coarse bulking structure and loosen clumps.
  • Poor site drainage: divert clean water and move future piles to a suitable, well-drained location.
  • Aeration-system problem: inspect the method before adding more ingredients.
Do not hide the symptom

Do not add lime, ash, fertilizer, microbial inoculants, or odor products merely to mask a wet-pile problem. Correct water entry, moisture, porosity, ingredient balance, and method-specific airflow. Do not apply unfinished, foul-smelling, or actively leaching material around food crops.
