Observation before diagnosis

What should I record when a garden plant looks unhealthy?

Do not begin with a treatment or a guessed disease name. Preserve what changed, where it appears, when it began, and what happened around it so the next diagnostic step has usable evidence.

The short answer

Record plant identity, the exact abnormal change, its pattern and progression, site and root-zone conditions, recent weather and management, and photographs at several scales. Compare affected and apparently unaffected plants. Keep suspected causes separate from observations, because different living and nonliving problems can produce similar symptoms.

A repeatable field record

Observe, map, time, contextualize, photograph, preserve

This sequence produces a useful record even when the cause remains unknown.

1. Identify the plant and place

Record the common or scientific name if known, variety, approximate age or planting date, bed or container, and whether nearby plants are the same species or different species.

2. Describe the change without naming a cause

Write what you can see or feel: yellowing, spots, holes, curling, wilt, stunting, dieback, soft tissue, residue, insects, webbing, odor, or root discoloration. Note the plant part and whether older or newer growth is affected.

3. Map the pattern

Record whether the problem starts at the top or bottom, inside or outside, one side or the whole plant. Then map the bed: one plant, a patch, a row, an edge, near an emitter, low spot, path, structure, or many plant species.

4. Build the timeline

Record when the plant last looked normal, when the change was first noticed, whether onset was sudden or gradual, and whether it is stable, improving, or spreading. Do not replace an unknown date with a guess.

5. Check the site and root zone

Note soil-moisture condition and check depth, drainage or standing water, soil type if known, container size, mulch, sun or shade, compaction, root condition when safely visible, and differences between affected and unaffected locations.

6. Record recent conditions and actions

Include heat, cold, wind, rain, irrigation, transplanting, pruning, construction or root disturbance, fertilizer, compost or other amendments, and every pesticide or home remedy used—including date, rate, and product label when available.

7. Photograph at several scales

Take one image of the whole setting and distribution, one of the entire plant, and close views of affected and healthy-transition tissue. Photograph both leaf surfaces when relevant and include a ruler, coin, or other scale without covering the feature.

8. Preserve evidence before changing everything

If immediate action is not required for safety or a regulated pest, avoid applying several treatments before the record is complete. Keep an apparently healthy comparison and follow the receiving clinic's instructions before collecting or shipping a sample.

What the observation may—and may not—show

Symptom is not the same as sign

A symptom is the plant's response, such as wilt or discoloration. A sign is direct evidence of an organism, such as spores or insect material. A symptom alone may have several possible causes.

Pattern can narrow the question

A uniform edge, row, low spot, irrigation line, or multi-species pattern may point toward a different set of possibilities than scattered plants of one susceptible species. Pattern guides investigation; it does not prove cause.

Normal growth can look abnormal

Plant age, variety, flowering, fruiting, dormancy, seasonal leaf loss, grafts, and old versus new canes can change appearance. Record what is normal for the plant before calling the change a disorder.

Wilt is not a moisture diagnosis

Dry soil, saturated roots, heat, stem or root injury, disease, salts, and other conditions can overlap. Pair wilt with a documented root-zone moisture check and other observations.

A photograph can be useful but incomplete

Images can show pattern and visible features, but some causes require magnification, culture, molecular testing, soil or tissue analysis, or a physical sample. A photo-only answer may remain tentative.

A treatment response is not automatic proof

Weather and plant condition may change at the same time as an intervention. Record what changed, preserve a comparison when practical, and avoid claiming cause from one uncontrolled result.

What to put in the garden planner

  • Date, time, plant identity, age or planting date, and location
  • Exact symptom or sign and affected plant part
  • Within-plant and within-bed pattern
  • Onset, direction, severity, and progression
  • Weather, irrigation, root-zone moisture, drainage, and site conditions
  • Recent fertilizer, amendment, pesticide, pruning, transplanting, or disturbance
  • Photo names and comparison-plant observations
  • Question, suspected causes, next check, and current uncertainty kept in separate fields
