Build the bed before buying the soil.

Choose metric or imperial units. Calculate bed area, soil volume, whole bags, and a geometric spacing estimate—then print a record that keeps assumptions and local sources visible.

Step 1

Bed dimensions

Use the inside planting dimensions. Fill depth means the material you intend to add.

Step 2

Material and spacing

Enter the volume shown on the bag or bulk-material listing. Bag count always rounds up. Do not convert weight to volume unless the product supplies a reliable density.

Step 3

Keep the local context

These optional fields travel with the printable record. TerraEvidence does not generate a planting window without a local source.

Formula and worked example

Rectangular area = length × width. Base volume = area × fill depth. Adjusted volume = base volume × (1 + allowance ÷ 100). Whole containers = adjusted volume ÷ container volume, rounded up.

Example

An 8 ft × 4 ft bed filled 12 in deep has a base volume of 32 ft³ (about 906 L). With 10% extra, it needs 35.2 ft³ (about 997 L), or 24 bags of 1.5 ft³.

The same dimensions are approximately 2.44 m × 1.22 m × 30.48 cm.
