Can I Compare Soil Test Results From Different Laboratories?

Sometimes—but matching analyte names or units are not enough. First confirm that the samples, methods, reporting bases, and interpretation contexts are compatible.

Short answer

Compare the measurement system—not just the numbers.

A change between reports may reflect the soil, the sample, the laboratory method, or more than one of those. Treat the comparison as unresolved until the relevant contexts match or a laboratory documents how the methods relate.

Comparison check

Seven questions to answer before calling a difference a trend

1. Is it the same sampled area?

Match the location or management zone, sample ID, intended use, and any areas deliberately excluded. Two valid samples can describe different soil.

2. Was the sampling protocol consistent?

Compare depth, date or season, number and pattern of subsamples, tools, mixing, storage, and recent fertilizer, lime, compost, irrigation, or disturbance. Sampling differences can create real differences before the sample reaches a laboratory.

3. Is the analyte exactly the same?

Do not collapse nitrate-nitrogen into total nitrogen, extractable phosphorus into total phosphorus, or electrical conductivity into a concentration of one salt.

4. Is the method or extractant the same?

Record the named procedure. Bray-1 phosphorus and Olsen phosphorus can both be reported in ppm, yet use different extractants, solution ratios, and extraction times. A unit conversion cannot make those procedures equivalent.

5. Do the units and reporting bases match?

Keep ppm, mg/kg, lb/acre, percent, meq/100 g, dry-weight basis, volume basis, and any laboratory conversion assumptions visible. Convert only when the measured property and basis are already compatible.

6. Are flags and reporting limits preserved?

“Below detection,” “estimated,” “greater than,” and laboratory-specific upper or lower reporting limits are part of the result. Do not replace them with zero or an invented exact value.

7. Is the interpretation calibrated to the same context?

Categories and recommendations may depend on crop, region, soil conditions, and the laboratory’s method-specific calibration. Matching numbers do not automatically carry the same meaning across reports.

Why identical units can mislead

A phosphorus example

The University of Minnesota Soil Testing Laboratory reports both Bray-1 and Olsen extractable phosphorus in ppm phosphorus. But Bray-1 uses an acid-fluoride extractant with a 1:10 soil-to-solution ratio and five-minute extraction, while Olsen uses sodium bicarbonate with a 1:20 ratio and thirty-minute extraction. The shared unit describes how results are expressed; it does not erase the different chemistry.

Make the next comparison easier to defend.

When feasible, use the same laboratory, package, method, sample area, depth, season, and composite-sampling protocol. Save the complete reports rather than copying only the headline numbers.
